California's Governor Gavin Newson signed a bill last Friday that could stop the use of private prisons and immigration detention centers. The law states that California will end their use of these private detention facilities by 2028. The state will also ban the renewing of contracts or signing new contracts after January in 2020. Newsom wanted to put an end to this due to over-incarceration and to stand up for the health, safety and welfare of the people in these centers who are here looking for asylum. ICE states that if the law takes place they will move their detainees out of California which would become more difficult for people to visit their friends and family in custody.
